India’s three top OEMs – Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra – have planned all-new products set to hit Indian roads soon. The Indo-Japanese automaker has confirmed the fourth-generation Maruti Swift launch for 9th May, while Tata and Mahindra will introduce the electric Curvv coupe SUV and Thar 5-door by mid 2024. Let’s delve into some key details of these upcoming models.
2024 Maruti Swift
The next-gen Maruti Swift (codename – YED) will come with significantly improved design, upmarket interior and an all-new Z-Series petrol engine. The hatchback will ditch the existing 1.2L, 4-cylinder K-Series petrol engine for a new 1.2L, 3-cylinder Z-Series motor that will be available with and without mild hybrid tech.
While power and torque outputs of the new unit are likely to be more or less similar to its replacement, it’s expected to offer enhanced fuel efficiency. The 5-speed manual and AMT gearboxes will be carried forward from the current generation. Its overall length will be increased, while the width and height will be slightly reduced. Most of its interior changes will be inspired by the new Fronx. The hatch will get a new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless smartphone connectivity and a bunch of new features.
Tata Curvv EV
The Tata Curvv concept based coupe SUV will be introduced with electric powertrain by mid 2024, while its ICE-powered version will arrive during this year’s festive season. The Curvv EV, based on Tata’s Gen II Acti.ev architecture, is estimated to deliver a range between 450-500km. The SUV’s ICE model will mark debut of Tata’s new 125bhp, 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine. It will also borrow the 1.5L, 4-cylinder diesel engine from the Nexon.
Inside, the Curvv SUV will have 10.25-inch dual screens along with features such as a 360 degree camera, sunroof, a wireless charger, connected car features and ventilated seats. Design-wise, the SUV will stay close to its concept featuring Tata’s signature LED headlamps and taillamps with split setup, gloss black cladding on the side profile and a coupe-like roof line. Compared to the Nexon, the new Tata Curvv will be 313mm longer and have a 62mm longer wheelbase.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door
The all-new Mahindra Thar 5-door is likely to be named – Thar Armada. The carmaker has confirmed that the off-road SUV will make its global debut on 15th August in a media event to be held in Australia. Compared to its 3-door version, the Thar 5-door will have more features on-board and carry slightly different design elements.
The lifestyle off-road SUV will have a newly-designed dashboard, dual digital screens measuring 10.25-inch each, rear AC vents, a sunroof, leatherette seat upholstery, push button start, front and rear centre armrest, rear wheel disc brakes and six airbags. Rumour has it that the Mahindra Thar 5-door could also get a dashcam and front parking sensors. The SUV will underpin the ladder frame chassis and five-link suspension, borrowed from the Scorpio N. Under the hood, the 5-door Thar will employ the same 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel engines with both 2WD and 4WD options.
