New Royal Enfield Himalayan service costs revealed

-First service at 500km

-Oil change recommended every 10,000km

-Labour cost is Rs 973

The all-new Royal Enfield Himalayan went on sale a few months ago and represents the company’s new direction in the ADV space. The bike is built completely from the ground up, meaning it features a new design, chassis, suspension and the company’s first liquid-cooled engine. The 452cc, single-cylinder unit makes 39.47bhp at 8,000rpm and 40Nm at 5,500rpm. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox.

As the bike is brand new, we were curious to find out the cost of servicing over a period of 36 months or 30,000km. We used the company’s online service calculator to get the information and the price includes the cost of oil as well as other consumables such as O-rings, coolant, air-filter, etc.

The cost of service below is the estimated amount and includes GST. However, the actual cost is expected to vary a little based on any additional repair work if needed. The cost of labour will also apply where deemed appropriate.

First service to fourth service

The first service for the Royal Enfield Himalayan is scheduled at 500km or 1.5 months. This service includes an oil change and the total cost is estimated at Rs 1441 out of which Rs 1071 is the cost of the engine oil. There is no labour cost involved.

The second service is free as well and is to be carried out at either 5,000km or six months, whichever is earlier. At this service one doesn’t need to change the oil and hence the only charge is for chain lube at Rs 120.

Royal Enfield recommends the third service to be carried out at 10,000km or a year. Since the oil change interval of the Himalayan is 10,000km, it adds to the total cost of Rs 2035. This service also includes a change of the air filter element, oil filler O-rings, washers and other miscellaneous items. The next service, that is the fourth service is at 18 months or 15,000km is relatively cheap at Rs 120 that again is for chain lube only.

Fifth service onwards

At the end of two years or 20,000km, the cost of service will be Rs 3,258. This includes an oil-change, air filter change and brake oil replacement. Royal Enfield will also charge a labour fee of Rs 973 for this service. In fact, from here on, there’s a labour charge levied at every service, set at Rs 973. Hence, at the end of 25,000km or 30 months, you can expect a service bill of Rs 1093, that includes chain lube and labour only.

Lastly, at the end of 36 months or 30,000km the service cost for the Himalayan is approximately Rs 2829 which includes new oil and a fresh air filter.

Over the course of around 30,000km or three years, you could be looking at spending close to Rs 11,000 on servicing the new Royal Enfield Himalayan. The amount seems pretty reasonable for a 450cc motorcycle.

However, one must also factor in variables such as any change in GST slabs or increase in labour costs that may come into effect over the next few years.
