Electric motorcycle manufacturer Zero Motorcycles has filed a patent for a new clutch system designed for its electric motorcycles. This system aims to enhance the riding experience for riders familiar with traditional motorcycles by providing a more engaging feel.
It functions similarly to a conventional clutch, even allowing riders to simulate ‘dumping the clutch’ like on gasoline-powered bikes. While clutch systems on electric bikes aren’t entirely novel, Zero’s approach focuses on controlling torque and regenerative braking at low speeds.
The patent drawing also details how the system works. Once you quickly release the clutch lever, the motor receives a brief burst of power exceeding the throttle’s demand, mimicking the sensation of dropping the clutch on a conventional motorcycle.
The first motorcycle to potentially receive this system is believed to be the Zero SR/F, based on the images included in the patent. However, given the similarities between the SR/F, the SR/S sports tourer, and the DSR/X electric adventure tourer, it’s likely these models could also be equipped with the new clutch system in the future.
