Mini Toyota Fortuner Debut This Year

We reported earlier that Toyota is developing an affordable version of the Fortuner SUV for the developing markets. This mini Toyota Fortuner will be slightly smaller than the regular model and is reportedly to make global debut by the end of this year. It will first go on sale in Thailand.

At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota showcased the new ladder-frame based & ICE-powered IMV O concept. In fact, the company has introduced the Hilux Champ, an affordable lifestyle pickup based on the IMVO platform in Thailand. Hao Quoc Tien, President of Toyota Motor Asia Pacific had told the media that there could be a new SUV based on the IMVO platform.

The new Mini Toyota Fortuner is likely to be called the Toyota FJ Cruiser, as the name has been patented by the Japanese automaker. It will be based on the same ladder-frame chassis that underpins the Hilux Champ. The IMVO is basically a different version of the IMV architecture, which underpins the Hilux, Fortuner and Innova.

The new SUV is likely to share the styling cues from the existing Fortuner, featuring boxy design. It is expected to share the dimensions including the 2750mm wheelbase with the existing Fortuner. The new SUV could be offered with two- and three-row seating layouts.

The cabin layout of the new mini Toyota Fortuner is likely to be shared with the Hilux Champ lifestyle pick-up. However, the SUV will have better quality material, a larger touchscreen infotainment unit, better fit & finish with more premium touches and several new features.

The new SUV is likely to be offered with multiple engine options including diesel and petrol. It is expected to get a 2.4-litre turbo diesel and a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine, while the petrol version could get a 2.7-litre petrol engine. These engines currently power the Innova Crysta and Fortuner in India.

New Mini Toyota Fortuner – India-Bound?

Toyota is yet to make an official announcement on the launch of IMVO architecture based products in India. Toyota was planning to launch a new C-SUV to fill the gap between the Hyryder and the Fortuner; however, this plan has been cancelled. The new mini Fortuner could be the right product to fill this void.
