New Toyota FJ Cruiser – Mini Fortuner Could Be Launched In India

It is no secret that Toyota is developing a low-cost Fortuner SUV for the developing markets. The new mini Fortuner is expected to make its global debut by the end of this year and will first go on sale in Thailand. It will be slightly smaller and more affordable than the popular Fortuner. Likely to be called the FJ Cruiser, the new mini Fortuner will be based on the low-cost IMV O platform.

The current gen Toyota Fortuner is hugely popular among Indian car buyers; however, it is significantly costlier than the rivals. In fact, the on-road prices for the Fortuner crossed the Rs 60 lakh mark in some cities. The company has no product in the fast growing C-SUV segment, which is dominated by Mahindra XUV700 and the Tata Safari. It was speculated that Toyota will introduce an all-new C-SUV based on the Corolla Cross; however, the plan has been cancelled.

The new mini Fortuner could be a good option to fill the gap between the Hyryder and the Fortuner. The new model will be based on the low-cost IMV O platform, which is basically a low-cost ladder-frame chassis. The company is already selling the Hilux Champ affordable lifestyle pick-up based on this plant in Thailand.

The IMV O architecture is based on the IMV platform, which underpins the likes of the Hilux, Fortuner and Innova. The IMV platform is already heavily localised in India, which will allow Toyota to bring in the new architecture and affordable Fortuner in India. The new SUV is likely to retain the boxy design with retro-styling elements. It is expected to ride on the same 2,750mm long wheelbase, which will allow the Japanese brand to offer both 5-and 7-seater options.

The SUV is likely to be offered with both petrol and diesel engines. In order to price it competitively, Toyota could opt for the 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine that powers the Innova Crysta in India. Adding to it, the SUV could get the 2.7-litre or a 2.0-litre petrol engine.
