BMW R 12 GS under development; spied testing in Europe

– To be powered by a 1,170cc boxer-twin motor

– Will be an off-road enduro bike

– Could be unveiled at EICMA or Intermot 2024

BMW Motorrad’s Chief, Markus Flasch, has confirmed that the company is working on a lighter R 12 GS with an air-cooled boxer twin for the global markets.

The BMW R 12 GS has been under development since the last few years and the production model is finally expected to see the light of the day sometime later this year. Spy images reveal that the motorcycle will use a new tubular steel frame, similar to that of the BMW R 12 nineT that was unveiled in 2023.

Unlike the R nineT Urban G/S, which was a cosmetic scrambler with questionable off-road credentials, the upcoming BMW R 12 GS could be a proper off-road enduro bike with a larger front wheel and knobby tyres. The test mule was seen running on a 21/17-inch wheel combination at the front and back. Reports also suggest that BMW could offer around 200-250mm of wheel travel at both ends and similar levels of ground clearance as well.

Coming to the heart of the matter, the familiar 1,170cc, boxer-twin, air and oil-cooled engine will power the BMW R 12 GS, which is likely to churn out 109bhp and a peak torque of 115 Nm. It will be paired with a six-speed gearbox.

Feature-wise, the R 12 GS is expected to pack a modern round TFT display with phone connectivity and map navigation. As for its launch timeline, BMW can target trade fairs such as EICMA and Intermot 2024 to showcase the motorcycle to the world.
