Why the accessories?
The Triumph Scrambler 400X was offered with free accessories worth Rs. 12,500 in December last year and again in January. The accessories included a fly screen, high mudguard kit, lower engine protection bar, tank pad, and a rear luggage rack. Moreover, a T-shirt was also part of the offer, though it had nothing to do with the motorcycle.
For those who received these accessories for free, they’re a no-brainer. But, what about those who already own the 400X sans accessories? Or those looking to buy a new one now? Should they consider getting the whole gamut of GMAs, or should they select accessories based on utility and associated price?
We threw almost every official accessory at the 400X, barring luggage, LED bullet indicators, and a sump guard (the latter two were out of stock), to tell you what’s worth getting and what’s not.
Must have
Fly screen: There is no functional benefit of having this particular fly screen on the 400X. It doesn’t help with wind protection. However, it does make the Scrambler look prettier. And for that alone – and that it is not exorbitant – it is worth getting. We do wish there was a dark version of the fly screen as well.
Price: Rs. 2,095
Quilted seats: The standard seats on the Scrambler are already good. However, once you park yourself on the quilted ones, you want – correction – need them. These are flatter and firmer but are more supportive and comfortable over longer journeys. These are pricey, nonetheless, they are still worth it, we believe.
Price: Rs. 9,103
Rear luggage rack: If you have any aspirations of touring, the luggage rack is a must. For me, it was a no-brainer given I love commuting with a top box and the convenience it offers. Now, there are many aftermarket options as well. However, given that the price of the GMA unit is close to what third-party vendors offer, it is better to go with a company-provided accessory in our book.
Price: Rs. 3,185
High mudguard kit: As with the fly screen, this one is more about visual enhancement. It is a must-have because this too makes the 400X look prettier still!
Price: Rs. 1,467
Can Avoid
Lower engine guard: The Scrambler 400X gets a standard engine/leg guard. The lower guard is added protection, no question. However, it is avoidable. It will protect your engine casing from being scuffed in a fall, but the casing itself isn’t exactly fragile.
Price: Rs. 2,788
Tank pad: The 400X gets pads in the tank knee recesses as standard. These are functional, but enhance the bike’s visual appeal as well. The accessory on offer is a smaller unit that sits on top of the tank. It is to protect the top of the tank from scuffs that the belt buckle might cause. Given that the seat and tank are almost level, we don’t think this small patch of rubber will be useful.
Price: Rs. 331
Final thoughts
The Scrambler 400X is as much a showpiece as it is a tool. And though things like the fly screen and the high mudguard might be vanity purchases, we think these are certainly worth getting. Just look at how much cooler our long-term looks with these add-ons!
