China’s Leapmotor EV Maker Coming Soon In India

A new Chinese automaker is gearing up to enter the Indian market. According to a recent media report, Leapmotor, a manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs), in partnership with the Stellantis Group, is likely to announce its investment plans in the coming weeks. The company plans to target the mass-market EV segment with budget offerings, subject to government approval. Leapmotor will be the third brand under Stellantis in India, joining Jeep and Citroen.

For people not in the know, Stellantis acquired a 20% stake in Leapmotor with a €1.5 billion investment in late 2023, with the aim of leveraging Leapmotor’s technology-first EV ecosystem in China and expanding operations into global markets.

Leapmotor’s product portfolio currently has three models: the C11, C01, and T03. The T03 is a compact electric vehicle offering a New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) range of 403 km. It features a Level 2 intelligent driving assistance system, along with a CATL high-performance lithium battery with a capacity of 36.5 kWh, NCM811 proportioning cells, and a PACK energy density of 171 Wh/kg. The EV’s NEDC range can be further extended by 15-25% with the use of a three-stage adjustable energy recovery system. The T03’s battery pack can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 0.36 hours using a fast-charging mode.

In terms of technology and features, the Leapmotor T03 offers a dual-screen setup featuring an 8-inch full LCD dashboard screen and a 10.1-inch HD central display with touch controls. It also features the brand’s OS intelligent car system with KDDI 3.0 voice recognition and facial recognition systems. Additional features include 11 high-precision radars (6 in the front and 5 in the rear), electronic stability control High Plus, a tyre pressure monitoring system, functional cat-eye automatic headlights, optional 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and quantum fluid LED taillights.

The C01 is an electric sedan with a claimed CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) range of 717 km. This model comes with an AI-powered Super Smart cockpit and other high-tech features. The C11 electric SUV is offered in four trims, providing a CLTC range of 650 km and the capability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.94 seconds. The C11 also includes 23 intelligent driver assistance functions, a panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker Arkamys sound system, and various other features.
