Hybrid vehicles and electric cars have emerged as greener alternatives to ICE-powered vehicles. In the past couple of years, the Indian automobile industry has witnessed the arrival of numerous EVs along with a variety of hybrid vehicles. These figures will certainly grow in the coming years as OEMs have planned a range of EVs and hybrid cars across segments.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar Motor are leading the hybrid car market with models such as the Innova Hycross, Grand Vitara, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Invicto, and Camry.

India’s 5 Top-Selling Hybrid Cars – Q1, 2024

In the first quarter of 2024 (i.e., January – March), a total of 28,482 units of hybrid cars were sold in the country. The Toyota Innova Hycross secured the top spot with sales of 14,442 units, followed by the Urban Cruiser Hyryder with sales of 9,370 units. The latter is Toyota’s re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, which was the third top-selling hybrid car in India.

The Indo-Japanese automaker managed to sell 2,232 units of the strong hybrid Maruti Grand Vitara in January – March 2024. The Maruti Suzuki Invicto, the re-badged Innova Hycross, stood at number four with sales of 1,210 units. The Toyota Camry was India’s fifth top-selling hybrid car, registering total sales of 754 units.

In the EV segment, Tata Motors remained the undisputed leader with offerings like Punch.ev, Nexon.ev, and Tiago.ev. In the first quarter of 2024, the indigenous automaker retailed 8,549 units of the Punch.ev, 5,704 units of the Tiago.ev, and 4,223 units of the Nexon.ev. To maintain its dominance in the EV space, Tata will soon introduce the Curvv EV, Harrier EV, and Safari EV.

The updated Mahindra XUV400, which was launched in January 2024, became the fourth top-selling electric car in the country. MG’s smallest electric offering, the Comet, recorded sales of 2,300 units in January – March 2024.
