The Union Government had introduced a new EV policy for automakers last week. This new electric policy made headlines not only in India but globally with several auto manufacturers showing keen interest in starting their business in India. One of the leading American automakers, Ford, is also planning to make a comeback in the Indian market. If reports are to be believed, Kay Hart, President – International Markets Group, Ford Motor Company, was in India to evaluate the prospects of the brand starting its sales and operations again in the country.
As per a source, Hart had a detailed discussion with Tamil Nadu state officials with regards to the Maraimalai Nagar production facility, which is located on the outskirts of Chennai. Last year, the American brand had changed its strategy and did not sell this factory as a comeback was on the cards.
Ford could eventually re-enter the Indian market with the launch of the highly popular Endeavour (Everest) SUV. In fact, the company is planning something very big as far as electric vehicles are concerned, revealed an AutoCar India report. It could commence the production of new affordable EVs based on an all-new platform at the Chennai facility, which could be sold in India as well as exported to other countries.
“In order for the company to justify reopening the factory, it needs to get into local production. While the likes of the Everest may be assembled and the Mustang Mach-E could be imported through the completely built route, the company is exploring the possibility of localizing electric vehicle platforms in India to not only cater to the domestic market but also ship vehicles overseas,” said the source to AutoCar India.
The official spokesperson from Ford India declined to comment on the exact visit purpose of Kay Hart but added that, “Senior leaders from Ford met and conveyed our sincere appreciation for the Tamil Nadu government’s invaluable support as the company undertakes a study to explore the future use of the Chennai manufacturing facility. We plan to create 2,500-3,000 additional jobs over the next three years at our headquarters.”
