Low-cost Bajaj Chetak variant to launch in India this month

– Could be priced under Rs. 1 lakh (ex-showroom)

– Will get fewer features compared to the other variants

The upcoming low-cost variant of the Bajaj Chetak will be launched in India this month. The electric scooter will undergo extensive cost-cutting to be launched at a lower and more competitive price tag, compared to the Ola S1 X.

For starters, the cut-price version of the Bajaj Chetak will be available in only solid colour options compared to the metallic and premium-looking colours on the regular model. Then, the scooter will ride on steel wheels instead of alloys on the Urbane and Premium models. Bajaj will further cut costs by offering drum brakes at both ends.

Another means to reduce the asking price will be by offering a basic negative-LCD unit, which was seen on the older model. The Urbane and Premium variants feature a TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation. Moreover, the more affordable Chetak will also get two cubby pockets to store knickknacks or a phone, in place of a lockable compartment on the higher variants.

There’s no word on the motor and battery pack of the new Chetak. However, Bajaj Auto might as well plonk the same powertrain as the Urbane variant on this low-cost version. All the changes mentioned above should help Bajaj launch the affordable Chetak at under Rs. 1 lakh (ex-showroom). For reference, the Chetak Urbane costs Rs. 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Chetak Premium is pegged at Rs. 1.47 lakh (ex-showroom).
