Sweden-based Volvo for the first time previewed its EX60, which is the electric equivalent of the XC60 SUV. Shown as a full-size clay model at the Volvo ES90 reveal event, the all-electric EX60 is set to launch overseas next year.

Positioning in EV lineup
After launch, the EX60 SUV will slot in the middle of the EX40 and EX90 in Volvo’s EV portfolio. That being said, the upcoming electric vehicle will be built on the newer SPA3 (scalable product architecture) instead of the SPA2 base underpinning the EX90 SUV and ES90 sedan flagships.
SPA3
Since the ES90 is already 800V charging compliant (300km range top-up in 10 minutes), the advanced EX60 will most likely support such fast charging speeds. Volvo’s tech chief Anders Bell called the SPA3 “100 percent electric and 100 percent Volvo Cars”, rather than a common platform with its Geely parent. For reference, the Volvo EX30 uses a shared SEA base. Later, both small and big Volvos will utilise the improved SPA framework. Additionally, Volvo’s Superset technology stack will receive over-the-air (OTA) updates to manage the EX60 EV and its functions.
Mega casting
Another benefit of the latest SPA3 construction is that it allows for mega-casting – a technology that allows for entire sections of a car to be made as a single unit rather than multiple parts. As a result, a lot of the production costs can be lowered. Notably, the EX60 is the first Volvo car to profit from mega-casting.
Volvo EX90, EX30 India launch
Volvo EX30
Volvo India has confirmed the 2025 launch of its EX90 and EX30, the latter of which is being considered for local assembly as well. All Volvo SUVs and cars sold here are locally assembled. At present, the automaker sells the EX40 (Rs 56.10 lakh) and C40 Recharge (Rs 62.95 lakh) in the green mobility segment here. Volvo may consider bringing the EX60 to widen its pure-electric portfolio of cars in the future.
