Why the Unrack system?

For all its positives – be it the sportier look, better seat, or weight reduction – the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450’s rally cowl does take away from practicality. You can’t mount a luggage rack without it looking odd, and there isn’t any point in adding saddle stays either. Therefore, we wanted a luggage system for the Himalayan that wouldn’t rob the motorcycle of its style but still managed to carry plenty.

This is where the Rahgear Unrack system comes in. Rahgear, though relatively new to the motorcycle luggage space having started operations in 2021, stands out because it is driven by a simple goal. Rahgear wants its luggage to help riders explore on the go. Meaning, that the gear in question needs to be handy to carry off the bike, not just at the journey’s end. The company also designs luggage to stay on the bike without feeling bulky or getting in the way.

The Unrack Tour Rackless system we have is one such solution.

The Specs

As this is a system, it has more than one working part. The mainstay or spine of the Rackless system is the holsters. These connect via a base plate and lots of velcro. As part of the Tour system, you get three tail bags – two Compack 15 units that go into the holsters, and a Compack 25 that sits on the base plate as a conventional tail bag.

The holsters, courtesy of the base plate and Velcro, can be adjusted at different angles and various levels of overlap to conform to the width or design of several motorcycles. There are three standout aspects of the holsters: these come with a soft backing to avoid scratches to the motorcycle’s bodywork; they have a compression strap at the top to cinch the Compack more securely; and the straps help flatten the holster along with the velcro closure at the bottom and out of the way when empty. Additionally, the holsters have drain holes to prevent them from turning into overflowing buckets during monsoons.

As for the bags, the Compack 15 is a completely waterproof 15-litre tail bag. It comes with a removable inner waterproof lining if you ever decide to clean it. It has integrated shoulder straps that convert it into a handy backpack when off the bike. One can access the straps by pulling off the back cover, which is held by additional velcro. The Compack 15 has a quick access pocket and an elastic shock cord to hold knick-knacks like riding gloves. The tail bag is made from hard-wearing 1050D polyester, gets YKK zippers for the access pocket, and comes with 3M Scotchline reflectivity strips. Furthermore, the bag has MOLLE webbing on its side which is used to secure the bag on the bike.

The Compack 25, as the name suggests, is a 25-litre tail bag. It shares the same qualities as the 15, including the convenience of tucked-away backpack straps and 100 per cent waterproofing. It is made of 1050D polyester and has a quick access pocket, a shock cord on the outside, and MOLLE webbing on the side to help secure the bag to the bike. So, identical in a way to the 15, only larger? Not just larger, but more feature-rich too. The Compack 25 also includes a bottle holder and a zippered pocket on the side, features missing on the 15. It gets a removable flap as well which Rahgear calls beaver tail. The beaver tail can be employed to carry light luggage like wet clothes outside of the main bag body, or even a jacket.

The Plan

We will install the holsters on the Himalayan 450 and leave them there. We will commute using the Compack 15 and do a few weekend rides with the 25. We will also fill up both the 15 and 25, strap them on the Himalayan, and go trail riding. Essentially, to see if things remain as secure as promised by Rahgear, and if the lack of weight and hard parts makes it easier to ride off-road. All this will happen in the coming months. So, do come back for updates.
