Maruti Suzuki Working On An Affordable Hybrid Car For India

Maruti Suzuki currently has two strong hybrid vehicles in its product portfolio: the Grand Vitara and the Invicto. Both models use Toyota’s self-charging strong hybrid technology, with price ranges of Rs 10.80 lakh – Rs 20.09 lakh and Rs 25.21 lakh – Rs 28.92 lakh, respectively. Aiming to make hybrid technology more accessible to the mass market, Suzuki Motor Corporation (the parent company of Maruti Suzuki) is developing an affordable hybrid for the Indian market.

The automaker plans to introduce its own cost-effective hybrid technology in smaller cars, including the Fronx compact crossover, the Baleno hatchback, a new mini MPV, and the Swift hatchback. This initiative will eventually improve the vehicles’ fuel efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint.

According to reports, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx facelift will be the first model to feature the brand’s new hybrid system (HEV) in 2025. The new-generation Baleno and a mini MPV based on the Japan-spec Spacia will follow in 2026, while the new Swift and the next-generation Brezza with hybrid technology will be launched in 2027 and 2029, respectively.

Maruti Suzuki aims to achieve a 25% sales share with hybrid electric vehicles and 15% with battery electric vehicles (BEVs). However, the major sales contribution (60%) is expected to come from internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles, as well as CNG, biogas, flex-fuel, ethanol, and blended-fuel models. Currently, the company has no plans to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles to the Indian market.

The Indo-Japanese automaker will begin production of its first electric vehicle in this fiscal year, with exports to Europe likely to start in the 2025-26 financial year. This will be the production-ready version of the Maruti Suzuki eVX concept, which was showcased at last year’s Auto Expo. In India, this electric vehicle will compete with the MG ZS EV, the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV, and the Tata Curvv EV.
